Studied Medicine at the University of Southampton, qualifying
in 1994. He trained in Ophthalmology in South Thames and
Wessex, completing specialist training in medical retinal conditions
under Professor Andrew Lotery at Southampton. During this
time he participated in a number of landmark trials into new
treatments for age related macular degeneration. He was appointed
as a consultant ophthalmologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital,
Portsmouth in 2004 and has developed a successful service offering
the latest treatments for macular diseases. His special interests
are cataract surgery, and retinal disease including macular
degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He is a section editor
for Eye, the Journal of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Anthony Evans
Was appointed as a consultant in Portsmouth in 1994, having
completed a fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus
at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He has established
a Paediatric eye service over the last 14 years and now works
closely in this field with his colleague Alison Tappin. He
was elected to the council of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists
in 2004 to represent the Wessex region and has been an examiner
for the College since 2003.
James Kirwan
After qualifying from Oxford University and St Marys Hospital Medical School, Mr Kirwan completed ophthalmology training in Birmingham, St Georges Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital. He undertook subspecialty training in glaucoma at Moorfields and worked as a researcher managing a major study into ways of improving the results of glaucoma surgery. He has authored over twenty five publications on glaucoma and continues research interests into ways of improving care for glaucoma patients. He has presented extensively at National and International meetings and is a peer reviewer for 5 major ophthalmic journals. His particular areas of expertise are the diagnosis, investigation and medical/ surgical management of glaucoma. He is responsible for the majority of glaucoma surgery in eastern Hampshire, attracting glaucoma referrals from across the region.
Hunter Maclean
Qualified as a doctor from Edinburgh medical school in 1986. He
trained in ophthalmology in Edinburgh and Newcastle with further
specialist training in Sydney, Australia. He was appointed as
a consultant ophthalmologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth
in 1998 having had 2 years experience at this grade in Newcastle. His
special interests include: cataract surgery,
tumour excision from the eye and lids, watery eyes, eyelid
malformations including ptosis, eye removal and prosthetic
rehabilitation, cosmetic and therapeutic botulinum toxin treatment
and cosmetic upper lid blepharoplasty.
Alison Tappin
Qualified
from Guy's Hospital Medical School (UMDS). She trained
in Ophthalmology in Cambridge, Nottingham and South Thames
and undertook advanced subspecialty training in Neuro-ophthalmology
at Kings College Hospital, London and Medical Ophthalmology
at St Thomas' Hospital, London. She completed a Fellowship
in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Great Ormond
Street Hospital and Kings College Hospital, and was appointed
as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital,
Portsmouth in 2005.
Yit Fung Yang
Qualified
in 1992 from the University of Aberdeen and went on to train
in Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. On
completing higher specialist training in 2001, he pursued
his interest in retinal diseases and gained a further 2 years
of advanced, highly specialised and intensive training in
Moorfields at Fellowship level in all aspects of retinal
surgery and treatment of retinal diseases. He was appointed
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and College Tutor at Portsmouth
Hospital NHS Trust practising in general ophthalmology including
cataract surgery with lens implantation as well as subspecialising
in retinal diseases.
